Okipa ceremony by Catlin. Plate 10. The vision quest by the fasters, George Catlin, 1867

The fasters are trying to get af vision. The man with the mask and an axe is ready to cut of a finger tip of the faster in front of him. The okipa maker is sitting in the center, smoking the sacred pipe of lone man. Catlin has painted four turtle drums although the mandans only have three.
