Berlioz conducting, Anton Elfinger, circa 1850

A young composer conducting a concert with a score for gunfire. Caricature by anton elfinger (‚cajetan‘) as supplement of wiener theaterzeitung of adolf bäuerle. The caricature uses a work of grandville from louis reybaud's novel jérome paturot à la recherche d'une position sociale (paris, 1846); this character of the novel pretends to portray berlioz (see for instance: jacques barzun. Berlioz and his century: an introduction to the age of romanticism - university of chicago press, 1982. - p. 202. Original caption was heureusement la salle est solide. Elle résiste! (fortunately the hall is solid. It can stand the strain!). Date: circa 1850.
