this pedestrian statue is one of the rare monumental effigies of the sun king that escaped revolutionary destruction. It comes from the paris city hall, where it adorned the arcade at the back of the courtyard. A first marble statue by gilles guérin, representing louis xiv victorious over the fronde, was placed there in 1654. Invited to a feast offered on january 30, 1687 by the municipality of paris, the king declared that this image “was no longer in season. ” the city office had the statue of guérin removed, which is today in the chantilly estate, and of which the carnavalet museum has a bronze reduction; he immediately ordered a new statue from coysevox, more peaceful in spirit, which was inaugurated on july 14, 1689.
