Study for ‘The Goodwins …’, 1874 RMG PU0462, William Lionel Wyllie

Study for ‘the goodwins …’, 1874 a study for the picture which wyllie exhibited at the royal academy in 1874, the title taken from 'the merchant of venice' by shakespeare – ‘the goodwins, i think they call the place, a very dangerous flat, and fatal, where the carcasses of many a tall ship lie buried. ’ both the sketch and the painting – which is in the russell cotes art gallery, bournemouth – show the very obvious influence of turner whom wyllie much admired. Study for ‘the goodwins …’, 1874. Date: probably late 1860-70s. Dimensions: 138 mm x 353 mm. Collection: Fine art.
