Portraits: full-length portrait of a gentleman. Animals: dog. Interior: the gentleman is portrayed inside an environment where on the left you can see a column and on the right a parallelepiped-shaped support covered in crimson velvet; at the top of the painting you can see a heavy crimson velvet curtain draped. There is no doubt that the painting comes from the pico collections. The painting remained in mirandola until 1716 and only then, together with many others cataloged here, was it taken to mantua, where its origin was never forgotten, so much so that in the 1937 inventory it is still indicated as a work of the "school of santo peranda". The identity of man is problematic; the hypothesis (cappi 1984, p. 132) that he is around twenty years old and could therefore be galeotto iv pico (1607 - 1637) is not convincing, because the man could be almost thirty years old; cappi himself proposes an alternative: prince alberigo carlo di cjbo, future husband of fulvia, daughter of alessandro i pico; instead it excludes the two princes of the house of este, ippolito geminiano and nicolò pietro. [two other hypotheses are possible: prince francesco, d'este?, who we know was portrayed by peranda in 1609 (venturi 1882, p. 143), or "a portrait of mr. Prencipe galeotto, brother of mr. Prencipe federico" (and therefore also of alexander i?, he must have been born before 1564 and died in 1592, it would therefore be a posthumous portrait), present in the inventory of 1649-1650 (il castello di mirandola 2006, p. 250)]. The attribution to sante peranda is accepted by scholars who have studied the work, even if martinelli braglia rightly believes that "certain inert and compilation passages, such as the background or the rich robes woven with gold" may belong to michelangelo, sante's son. It is difficult to express the chronology of the work, which cappi on stylistic grounds tends to date towards 1609-1613, that is, in peranda's first portrait production for the court of mirandola. The warm chromatic range and the lack of landscape cues lead us to compare the painting to the portrait of cesare d'este or the portrait of cardinal alessandro d'este. Date: between 1609 and 1613. Depicted People: Galeotto IV Pico della Mirandola. Collection: Palazzo ducale, Mantua. Ritratto di Galeotto IV Pico
