François Maréchal - La chercheuse d'escarbilles (1901), François Maréchal, 5 March 1901

Etching and drypoint. 347 "beautiful flower" of coal mines and factory chimneys, truly symbolizes the effort of working-class wallonia. There is no suffering, no resignation, no fatality on this face, but a serene acceptance of the joys and pains of existence. She knows that after the arduous and miserable task of the day, the hour of respite will come, the "shepherd's hour", of the "rendez-vous". Evening closed, she will find her lover; the little blue flower will open, and, abandoning its head to the shoulder of the fiancé, in front of the flowing meuse, the smoking blast furnaces and the humming coal mine, together, they will taste the moments of love which console and pay for a lifetime of sorrow. Date: 5 March 1901.
