Philip miller portrait
this illustration (by c. J. Maillet, i787) first appeared in a posthumous french edition of the gardeners dictionary. Unfortunately maillet seems to have picked the wrong miller. The confusion is perhaps understandable as chelsea seemed to collect millers at the time. During philip's incumbency, in i743, joseph miller became demonstrator of plants to the apothecaries' society. Philip's two sons worked under him (one, charles, becoming the first curator at the cambridge botanic garden). Two further millers, james and john, worked on the banks/parkinson botanical sketches made on cook's endeavour voyage.
