iconographic description:
battle near the valmy mill (champagne). National volunteers of kellermann and dumouriez attacking the prussian soldiers of brunswick, september 20, 1792. Pl. 11 of "military souvenirs of the rep. , the consulate and the empire" 1833. Military historical scene, landscape. Army shouting "long live the nation", general on horseback in harness, hats on swords and bayonets, horsemen, officers, artillery, soldier-citizens. Cannon, death, corpse. Historical commentary:
as dumouriez's soldiers were unable to face the professional contingents of the prussians, those of kellermann joined them at valmy. Dumouriez gives the orders, but kellermann gives the ardor to his troops. The mill was then demolished and was rebuilt in 1947. Cf. The great dates of the revolution, 1789-1799, p. 84. This image was engraved under the consulate by couché fils, but was especially widespread in the 1830s. Cf. J. Massin, almanac de la rév. Fr. , 1988, t. 1, p. 175. Re-use of this sheet for “victoires et conquêtes”, volume 1, p. 36?
