The battle of turnhout, 24 january 1597, part of the eighty years' war; different stages of the battle shown in two registers; top register, the dutch army (including english and scottish mercenaries) led by maurice, prince of orange, chasing the spanish army led by archduke albert, past turnhout towards the tielenheide at right, the castle of turnhout at centre; lower register, the battle on the tielenheide and the spanish army fleeing towards the right, herenthals seen in the distance, the count of varax lying dead at centre; captioned throughout the composition indicating different places, people and sections of both armies; a cartouche with the coat-of-arms of the states general in lower left corner, flanked by lions; a cartouche with the coat-of-arms of maurice and his banners in lower left corner, containing neo-latin text; second state with address of visscher. 1597 engraving, printed from two plates on two sheets of paper, one above the other.
