Leaina before the judges, mural design for the hertenstein house in lucerne. Black and grey pen and brush, with grey wash, 21. 2 × 16. 4 cm, kunstmuseum basel holbein drew this design for the murals for the façade of the merchant jakob von hertenstein's house in lucerne, switzerland, between 1517 and 1519. The murals themselves no longer exist. The drawing shows leaina, a legendary courtesan from ancient athens. She bites off her tongue rather than testify to judges against her lover aritogeiton, the tyrannicide. Date: c. 1517–18.
