Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-12-13) letter no. 217 (1943-12-24) next letter (1943-12-30) envelope: front back text [this letter is in front of me now, how many times have i read it through and thought of you, what are you doing today] how are you and how are you spending this evening? today, as the lights glittered on our beautiful christmas tree, i thought about christmas as we used to celebrate it when i was little. How i first went for a walk with dad and then waited outside the door, how it crackled and rustled inside and then the longed-for doorbell rang. And then it was time to unpack, how wonderful that was back then! later, when i was older and dad and i trimmed the tree and we only ate the sweets that fell down, and there was always quite a lot that "fell down". - the song "silent night" was playing on the radio. How wonderful is this one of the beautiful german christmas songs! there is no more beautiful festival than christmas and no people on earth knows how to celebrate it like we germans do! so we want to hope from the bottom of our hearts that we will soon be able to celebrate it again in peace and quiet at home with our loved ones. Date: 24 December 1943.
