On january 1st, 1980 the municipality ceased to exist: the southern half of heenvliet melted together with the municipalities abbenbroek, geervliet, oudenhoorn and zuidland melted to form the new municipality bernisse. The northern half became a part of brielle. Heenvliet (the village) lies about 17 km southwest of rotterdam. Date: 1867.
