A nightmare, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1857

A parody of john everett millais's painting 'a dream of the past: sir isumbras at the ford' with john ruskin as a braying ass ridden by millais, and hunt and rossetti as the two children whom the old knight in the painting is carrying across the ford; a tower and arched bridge in the background, three figures representing titian, raphael and michelangelo praying by the side of a pond with a scroll lettered, "orate p[ro] nobis". From the knight's armour hangs a can of paint with the lettering "prb", and branded onto the backside of the donkey is "j[ohn]r[uskin] oxon"; three columns of verse on a scroll below the image. 1857 zincotype.
