composition in two sketches. On the left: a man smoking a pipe dressed as a scoundrel. On the right: three people seen from behind are walking arm in arm. They are two slender and elegant men flanking an old man. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "--you understand," said montefiore in a low voice, taking his arm, "that as long as i am with you i will have nothing to fear; but if i came back alone, and a scoundrel followed me, i would be very good to kill. - what do you have on you?-- oh! almost nothing, replied the defiant italian. I only have my earnings. However, they would still make a pretty fortune for a beggar who, certainly, would have a good reputation as an honest man for the rest of his days.
