Hms 'queen elizabeth', battleship, and a modified w-class destroyer
this is a loose wash depiction of a 'queen elizabeth'-class battleship with an awning rigged amidships on the port side. Only the 'queen elizabeth' herself had the rig shown and she carried it from 1918 to 1926. From 1927 she had a sternwalk fitted which is not present here. The destroyer on the left - also seen from broad off the port quarter - seems to be a modified w-class of the second group of that type. There were seven vessels in this group ('veteran', 'whitshed', 'wild swan', 'witherington', 'wivern', 'wolverine' and 'worcester'): the first of these was completed in july 1919 and the last in september 1922, so this is certainly a post-first world war image. Date: 1919. Dimensions: Sheet: 292 x 451 mm; Mount: 481 mm x 633 mm. Collection: Fine art.
