This hanging scroll depicts five puppies playing beneath an autumn maple branch. When he painted this autumn scene, nagasawa rosetsu, the son of a warrior, had become adept at the free brushwork and playful compositions for which he is renowned. Date: circa 1790 (Edo). Place of creation: Kyoto, Japan. Dimensions: height: 108 cm (42.5 in); width: 36.2 cm (14.2 in). Medium: ink and pigment on silk, paper. Collection: Walters Art Museum.
