United States soldiers at Camp "William Penn" Philadelphia, PA., 1863 (5390348857)

Recruitment print depicting members of an african american regiment posed with their white commander at camp william penn, cheltenham township. Begun in 1863 with the support of the union league, eleven regiments were formed at camp william penn, the first pennsylvania camp for volunteer african american regiments. William penn was the largest civil war camp for the training of officers to lead african american troops.
