It is dated and bears the signature of the then 19-year-old artist on the back. The portrait and history painter engelbert seibertz was born in brilon in 1813. He studied at the art academy in düsseldorf and later at the royal art academy in munich, where he produced numerous paintings, drawings and frescoes in the maximilianeum. Later in brilon he created his illustrations for goethe's faust. Seibertz then worked as an artist in prague and again in munich, where he produced around 300 works, including two monumental frescoes in the maximilianeum for the bavarian king maximilian ii. He also designed stained glass windows for glasgow cathedral. From 1870 he lived and worked in arnsberg. There he created around 140 pictures, mainly of well-known families from the sauerland region. Engelbert seibertz died in arnsberg in 1905. Date: 1832.
