Historical commentary:
the duchess of mazarin commissioned jean-marc nattier, in 1740, to paint portraits of the last two daughters of the marquis de nesle, her cousins. However, we do not know for what location she intended them. Nattier represented hortense-félicité, marquise de flavacourt, in “silence” and anne-marie, marquise de la tournelle, in “point du jour”. These two allegorical portraits achieved great success at versailles and were at the origin of nattier's official career. The original portrait of the marquise de la tournelle, painted in 1740, is not located to this day. It cannot be the full-length portrait from the museum of fine arts in marseille, a formerly enlarged replica, which was part of the royal collections, but which seems never to have had a counterpart. There is a high quality autograph version, where the model is seen half-length, which is certainly the closest replica of the original work (national museum of the châteaux of versailles and trianon). The canvas from the cognacq-jay museum, in oval format, is a copy of the bust of the portrait from 1740, executed according to the original work or one of its numerous replicas (cf. Burollet, thérèse, 2004, p. 228-230). Person / character depicted:
