In this group portrait, 'charitas', love, one of the three christian virtues, is depicted by a woman surrounded by children. The man at the back left is probably her husband. In the top left corner the painter has depicted himself as the evangelist luke, patron of painters. He writes a text: 'i have this. Int iaer our lords 1623. September in amstelredam'. On the far right is john the baptist. Audience members could be seen to his right, but because the panel has been shortened, they have disappeared. The man with the book behind the woman probably represents paul, who emphasizes the virtue of love in his writings. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1 January 1623.
