The work represents saint almachius, who was a christian martyr from the 4th century who wanted with his intercession to put an end to the gladiator fights that took place in the flavian amphitheater, better known as the colosseum. The scene, located in a coliseum already in ruins, shows the appearance of the saint carrying a cross around which the crowd gathers, creating a spectral vision of heightened drama. Its author presented the painting to the national exhibition of fine arts of 1887, receiving adverse criticism because the painting was described as incomprehensible, although it obtained a first class medal and was acquired by the spanish state.
