Iconographic description: a mother and her daughter enter a state room decorated with heavy curtains. The young woman is elegant, fine, with downcast eyes, wearing a wide-brimmed hat. His mother has a rustic appearance, her features dull, her face squeezed into a cap lined with a shapeless hat. On the left of the image, a middle-aged man, sitting with his legs apart in an armchair, looks at them and smiles. On the right of the image, a slender and elegant young man greets the young woman while uncovering himself. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the morals of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "i went alone to the duchess of lenoncourt where i heard nothing of henriette, where no one, except the good old duke, simplicity itself, spoke to me about her; but from the way in which he received me, i guessed the secret recommendations of his daughter. At the moment when i was beginning to lose my "nevertheless astonishment that the sight of the great world causes to every beginner, at the moment when i glimpsed the pleasures there by understanding the resources it offers to the ambitious, and when i took pleasure in putting into practice henriette's maxims while admiring their profound truth, the events of march 20 arrived. " [excerpt from the lily in the valley, by honoré de balzac] themes / subjects / places represented: subject of society, morals, ball, curtain mode of acquisition: purchase institution: maison de balzac inventory number: bal 98-138.
