the painting is probably inspired by a novel published by jean-baptiste née de la rochelle (1692-1772), le maréchal de boucicault, nouvelle historique (paris, d. Beugnie, 1714) recounting the imaginary loves of jean ii le meingre, known as boucicaut, marshal of france with "mlle de beaufort" (loosely inspired by his future wife antoinette de turenne (alias antoinette roger de beaufort) and the opposition of isabeau de bavière, in love with boucicaut. Brief summary here the novel was again published in abridged form in the bibliothèque universitaire des romans, september 1781, p. The engraving is taken from etrennes de polymnie for the year 1822 (paris, marcilly), (described in the bulletin du bibliophile et du librétaire, 1904, p. 44) which included 6 anonymous engravings reproducing 6 paintings presented by women artists at the salon of 1817.
