the sitter was the son of john speke (1651/2-1728), a politician and monmouth rebel, and his second wife elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of robert pelham of compton valence, dorset. George speke followed his father and grandfather into politics as a whig, serving in parliament in 1722 and 1747. He was the father of anne, wife of frederick, 2nd earl guilford. Date: 18th century.
