Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (10/29/1943) letter no. 201 (11/01/1945) next letter (11/02/1943) envelope: front front and back and sides left side panel right side panel text in the field, 1 november 1943. My beloved mother! i want to send you my heartfelt greetings. Unfortunately the post is getting worse again, well maybe some will arrive today. Hopefully all my letters will arrive, have the 100 rm arrived yet? we now have a new “acquisition” in our bunker. Just imagine a “radio”! yes, we are becoming more and more posh. Every train gets this radio for a week. So now we sit by the radio day and night and our thoughts are in our lovely homeland. How often do i hear a beautiful viennese waltz or a nice viennese song. Yes, when we can hear all of this again in person in our beloved vienna, it will be wonderful. Last night we listened until 2 a. M. It is a wonderful encouragement for us. Otherwise life here goes on as usual, there is nothing new. Ivan has calmed down a bit, hopefully it stays that way. We have taken prisoners who had no weapons or shoes! they were all the civilians who remained behind on our return march, old and young. They had been tasked with capturing weapons and clothing from us. That's where they come in. Around 600 dead russians were left lying with us, around 200 were captured. So he got a proper brush-off. Please don't worry about me, i'm fine, and i'm gaining weight again. It's no wonder [i don't do anything most of the day]. Date: 1 November 1943.
