De nachtelijke vaart, Hokkei, 1826

Lady of the court and nobleman on a night trip through a snowy landscape. This scene refers to chapter 51 'ukifune' from the tale of genji. In this episode, genji's grandson, prince niou, runs away one night with the lady ukifune. The tale of genji (genji monogatari) was written in the heian period (794-1185) by the lady-in-waiting murasaki shikibu. With three poems.
