This early woodcut entitled "rider and landsknecht" by albrecht dürer, created at the end of the 15th century, is a single-sheet print from a series of 7 large prints that dürer made from 1496 at the age of 26, using printing blocks of roughly the same size, measuring approximately 39 x 28 cm. The engraving with its border line measuring approximately 38. 7 cm x 28. 2 cm represents one of two "images from daily life". The copy from the provenance of johann andreas boerner (1785 - 1862, nuremberg) was auctioned with his collection at weigel in leipzig on october 17, 1864 after boerner's death and was listed in the auction catalog under number 714. The print came into the possession of ralf leopold von retberg (1812-1885, munich) and was catalogued after his death at the auction of his collection at amsler and ruthardt in berlin from march 4, 1886 (number 36) as follows: "magnificent impression with the sharpness of a pen drawing, on paper with the imperial orb" joseph meder described the watermark number 53 as "the large imperial orb with line and star" the swiss-based auction house galerie kornfeld auktionen ag estimated the "[. . ] exceptionally beautiful early print by dürer" in mid-2017 with an estimated price of 100,000 swiss francs (chf).
