One of more than 87 copper engravings on the occasion of the funeral ceremony carried out according to catholic rites for duke johann friedrich of brunswick-lüneburg, who was buried on april 21, 1680 in the princely crypt of the leine castle in hanover. The engraving, entitled "the other side of the ducal corpse" as a double page, shows the coffin of the deceased monarch surrounded by canopy bearers behind eight draft horses draped with black blankets. The complete work with the title "iusta funebria serenissimo principi joanni friderico brunsvicensium et luneburge: duci a revermo et sermo fratre ernesto augusto episcopo osnabrugensi duci brunsv: et luneb. Persoluta" was published in 1685 by gottfried kaspar wächter, the printer appointed by the princely university of hesse-schauenburg, in the dimensions 446 x 310mm. The engraving shown here comes from the provenance of the braunschweig-lüneburg statesman otto grote, dated march 1690 with a gift inscription for the university of helmstedt. Two ink stamps from the duke august library in wolfenbüttel, including an original stamp, are also part of the lot, for which the auction house christie's initially estimated a price of 2,500 to 3,500 gbp in 2010 and then knocked down the item at 4,000 gbp.
