De becquet, rue childebert n°9” [printer], “we subscribe to aubert, gallery véro dodat. » [editor]; in the image, on the back of an armchair, left, signature: “jjg” [jean-jacques grandville, designer] iconographic description: the pl. Denounces france's participation in the belgian war against dutch troops. Capture of the port of antwerp from november 15 to 25, 1832. According to "la caricature", the reasons are bad. Indeed, she believes that it was largely to strengthen louis-philippe's son-in-law, léopold i (married to the daughter of the king of the french, louise d'orléans) on the belgian throne that france became involved in the war. The pl. Features four characters playing war like children with toys. Although they have adult features, they are, on the other hand, child-sized. From right to left: soult, henri de rigny, an unidentified character, and louis-philippe, seen from three quarters back, but recognizable by the sideburns and the forelock. Soult aims with a small cannon mounted on books (“cannon law,” “chickpeas”). Cannonballs are chickpeas contained in a small bowl. Rigny blows on small paper boats floating on the water from a bowl (the “suffren”, “resolu”, “calipso”, “conway” boats) and has his elbow resting on a sheet of paper reading “escadres // combined”. The 3rd character holds a tricolor flag bearing the inscription “with the // permission // of // the engleter […] [england]” and fires a “white bean” from a blowgun. The sound emitted by this object is transcribed: “tu…tutu…turlututu…tu…tu…tu”. The flying height of the bean is calculated above the head of one of the soldiers that louis-philippe positions (from 1 to 6 in "feet") to attack the citadel of antwerp, the model of which is on the far left of the composition. Paper casseroles are also requested to participate in the fight. A sheet mentions “last summation // with fees”. The documents placed in front of the model bear the inscriptions “notification // evacuation”, “protoco […] [protocol]”, “summons”, “notificat […] [notification]”. One of the little lead soldiers perched on the roofs of the model and embodying the dutch army carries the country's flag with the inscription "stough". The pl. Denounces this murderous war which killed many french soldiers, but also a good number of belgian civilians. Grandville criticizes the irresponsibility of members of the government who view war as a game, without being aware of the disastrous consequences. Person / character depicted: soult, nicolas-jean de dieu; louis-philippe i, king of the french; gauthier de rigny, henri, count mode of acquisition: retrospective registration date of acquisition: 20–02–2013 institution: maison de balzac.
