The “cosette” motif from victor hugo’s socially critical novel les misérables (1862) inspired numerous artists in the 19th century, including the luxembourger michel sinner (1826-1882), who met victor hugo personally during the latter’s exile in luxembourg. The figure of cosette, a child born out of wedlock and exploited by her greedy foster parents before the ex-convict valjean takes care of her, represented the fate of many orphans in the 19th century. Date: 1863. Medium: charcoal on canvas. Collection: Villa Vauban.
