Die Rasenbleiche, Max Liebermann, 1883

Die Rasenbleiche, Max Liebermann, 1883

Original version from the exhibition catalogue of the salon de paris 1883 the "bleaching of the lawn" was heavily criticised by the parisian press. This criticism, combined with his own dissatisfaction, prompted liebermann to make major changes to the picture. The young woman in the foreground and the woman between the trees were painted over. More items of laundry were added to the now empty space on the lawn. The format was also changed by shortening the canvas by a good 20 cm at the bottom edge. These changes give the bleaching of the lawn a new character; the focus is no longer on the young woman in the foreground, but goes into the depth of the landscape, which is further emphasised by the wider format. Date: 1883. Max Liebermann - Die Rasenbleiche Skizze Salon
