Head of Virgin Mary, Cretan school (17th c., Pushkin museum)

Head of Virgin Mary, Cretan school (17th c., Pushkin museum)

"the mother of god, shoulder-length". John apakass (?). First half of the 17th century, crete. Wood, tempera, gilding. 46x36. 5 cm. The pushkin museum. Zh-2854 restoration: solid board, dowels. Losses of wood (at the corners), gesso and paint layer, especially on the clothes. The halo is cylindrical. The bust composition is typical of cretan icon painting. The style is strongly italianized. The face is constructed plastically. Western influences are also evident in the details: the treatment of the eyes, lips, etc. The developed color chiaroscuro is combined with subtle iconographic highlights and smooth multi-layered personal writing. The maphorion with its rigid folds and asist is painted in a different manner - much more summarily and fluidly. This combination of treatment of the face and draperies, as well as the shining pink-crimson coloring, are close to the manner of the artist constantine paleokapas. (see his icon "the entombment" 1620-1645 from the monastery of st. John the theologian on patmos. ). Date: 17th century.
