Detail: Dying Sebastian and Maurice, Józef Mehoffer, between 1898 and 1899

In the lowest zone, the detail from the apostles' windows shows the dying of the martyrs in an incredible way. Mauritius, his neck cut by a sword, red blood pours over his chest; sebastian, pierced by arrows, which also results in streaming blood over his heaving chest. Each of the two dying men is accompanied by a female lament figure. The subliminal eroticism of these images is unmistakable, which led to controversy in public after the windows were installed.
