The greeks crossed the granicus which closed the entrance to asia to them, despite the trunks of trees piled up on the banks of the river. The painting combines elements of the battle of cascina by michelangelo (disappeared; known from the engraving), as well as frescoes by raphael and his students in the vatican: the victory of constantine and heliodorus driven from the temple.
