in the 1850s, courtavenel castle was a literary and musical meeting place. The owner louis viardot, aged around forty, married pauline garcia aged 18 in 1840 who would become the singer pauline viardot, younger sister of the famous maria malibran. George sand was the architect of the marriage. The russian writer ivan turgenev made frequent stays in courtavenel. Charles gounod composed the opera sapho for pauline there.
