This is a plaster model of the sculpture war (a statue of the classical greek figure of mars) found in the u. S. Capitol building. The original statue arrived at the capitol in 1834 and to be placed in a niche on the east front portico, which flanked the doors to the capitol rotunda. In 1958 it and its partner peace were removed in the capitol's east front extension. They both deteriorated badly and ergo were mended in order for plaster models to be made from the originals by george gianetti of washington, d. C. Carvers then reproduced the new figures in vermont marble, and they were placed in 1960. To the right of this statue is that of peace.
