iconographic description:
the scene takes place on a country lane. A young peasant woman depicted with the head of a lamb is taken away by force by a man with the head of a wolf, while her young companions with animal heads also run away in panic. A man armed with a pike comes running to defend her, he has the head of a shepherd dog. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "the wolf came, and he quickly kidnapped the most beautiful sheep of the flock. She certainly showed a little complacency, and if now she seems to cry: to the wolf! it is because seeing [the shepherd], out of the corner of her eye, she wants to hide her complicity in the kidnapping. [. . . ] there is something [. . . ] that has escaped forever, it is innocence and calm of the heart. "
