Now in september, exactly 2 years ago, i marched to the desna to attack on october 2nd. Now we are marching too. But everything is going according to plan; it is not an escape. Everything is being taken, burned or destroyed. The whole of russia is burning; the poor population is to be pitied, but it has to be done. The russians are not allowed to have any accommodation in the winter. The population is sad that we are leaving; they have never had it as good as it is with us. Who knows what will happen next? the bad times are already coming, rain and mud [rasputiza]. I am now 35 km west of krichev [krichev was taken by the red army on 30. 9. 43. ] when you receive this letter [we are already further towards home again!]. Date: 28 September 1943.
