The arrival of the portuguese court to brazil in 1808 caused a great transformation in the city of rio de janeiro. The delegation that left portugal in 1807 had around 15 thousand people, a contingent that caused a great demographic impact on the city. One of the locations that felt the changes most was the region where the são cristóvão neighborhood is today. A predominantly rural area until the beginning of the 19th century, são cristóvão went through a rapid process of growth when the royal family began to reside in the neighborhood, in the building where the national museum now operates, in quinta da boa vista. At the end of the 18th century, the merchant elias antonio lopes acquired a residence on the land where the former fazenda são cristóvão was located, belonging to the jesuits. Elias donated the property to the prince regent in 1809 and d. João vi moved to the palace in 1816 after the death of d. Maria i. The building underwent several renovations throughout its history. The illustration shows the improvements made between 1808 and 1831, but the palace underwent expansion processes from 1850 onwards. The building was listed by the national historical and artistic heritage institute – iphan on may 11, 1938.
