iconographic description:
in this nocturnal scene, prince rosolin, duke of orléans, who has gone to travel to switzerland, is visited by the mocking spirits of “la caricature” and “charivari”. The prince, his head wearing a kerchief, half rises on his bed, frightened by the appearance of the two "evil elves". On the wall are pinned specimens of insects, an allusion to the "study of nature" in which the duke is said to have embarked (column 1955), through the window a crescent moon shines, on the bedside table are placed a "cheese", a collection of "views of switzerland", an "alliance" and a bouquet of plants. A flowered straw hat, a coat and a walking stick placed on a table evoke the duke's new country life. The scene takes place in mullinkhausen castle, which, according to the newspaper, is not found on any map of switzerland. This plate, in which we can recognize certain reminiscences of the famous "nightmare" by johann heinrich füssli, testifies to the resumption by the satirical press of the fantastic imagination of black romanticism. According to the explanation, the subject of this "little history painting" is borrowed from an article by albert cler in the newspaper "carillon". Person / character depicted:
orléans, ferdinand-philippe d', duke
