Counter-proof of a sketch of a painting by angélique mongez made by monsaldy with a view to creating an engraving representing the salon of 1804, a project which never saw the light of day. Reproduction in the sense of the original work. Angélique mongez's painting, alexandre mourning the death of darius' wife, was exhibited in paris at the salon of 1804 (booklet number 324) with the following description:
"alexander having put darius and his army to flight, under the walls of issus, took prisoner his mother sysigambis, his wife, his infant son, and his two daughters. While the macedonian hero pursued the king of persia into assyria, the wife of the fugitive prince succumbed under the weight of her pain and the fatigue of the journey. Alexander, informed of his death, could not hold back his tears (quinte-curtius, book. 4, chap. 10). He went to the tent where the unfortunate sysigambis was mourning the queen of persia. ".
