The Yang Kuei-fei cherry blossom, Yashima Gakutei, between 1821 and 1822

Yang kuei-fei (719-56), known as yôkihi in japan, was the favorite concubine of the chinese t'ang emperor hsüan tsung (685-762). The cherry blossom species named after yôkihi (yôkihisakura) originated in nara. With two poems, one poem tells about the origins of the cherry blossom: the cherry blossom known as the yôkihi comes from china - that's why it blooms in the spring in the yoshino mountains - and these are, indeed, south of nara.
