Study of the figurehead of HMS 'Victory' RMG PV3262, William Lionel Wyllie, early 1920s

Study of the figurehead of hms 'victory' a loose watercolour and pencil study, with notes on measurements, probably made while 'victory' was under restoration in her permanent dry-dock at portsmouth in the early 1920s, having been moved there in december 1921. (the red of the stemhead below the carving, for example, is undercoat not the final paint layer). The inscription '173 / cat head', lower right, is in wyllie's hand but about something else. Two slight sketches of sailing boats are upside down at the top of the sheet. Date: early 1920s. Dimensions: 354 mm x 253 mm. Collection: Fine art.
