The altarpiece was already mentioned by vasari (1568, iv, p. 385). It was commissioned by giuliano scala for the town of sarzana in liguria, on the border of tuscany. Raffaele soprani (1674, p. 245) seems to have found information about the real patron, a certain benedetto celsi. Both of the patron's namesake saints, benedict and celsus, can be seen in the picture. Celsus is at the bottom left, in the usual position of a donor. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1528. Dimensions: height: 228 cm (89.7 in). Medium: paint on poplar panel. Depicted People: Virgin Mary, Christ Child. Collection: Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Andrea del sarto, pala di sarzana (distrutta 1945)
