iconographic description:
a motley crowd is gathered in a field. In the foreground, a drum is placed on the ground and acrobats stand next to it. In the background, onlookers watch a clown parade. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists on numerous subjects, as we can see in the following extract: " -- i know adam so well that i am sure he would forget me for some trickster like your malaga. But where did you see her? -- in saint-cloud, last september, on the day of the festival. She was in the corner of the scaffold covered with canvas where the parades take place. Her comrades, all in costumes polish, gave a frightful hullabaloo. " [excerpt from la falsse mistress, by honoré de balzac]
