Diana with a stag (or diana of anet) by an unknown sculptor, sometime before 1554. The sculpture once crowned an immense fountain in the fountain court of the chateau d'anet, france. It was moved to paris by alexandre lenoir at the time of the french revolution and is now in the louvre museum. Lenoir attributed the work to jean goujon. In 1929 maurice roy showed conclusively that this is incorrect and suggested benvenuto cellini, but this attribution also has not been generally accepted. Anthony blunt suggested that it is more likely an early work of germain pilon or his workshop. This photograph is from the brooklyn museum archives, goodyear archival collection (s03_06_01_020 image 2536). Date: before 1923. Collection: Brooklyn Museum.
