Paul Nash - Nightfall, Zillebeke District - Art.IWMART1148, Paul Nash

In the introduction to the catalogue of nash's exhibition 'void of war' at the leicester galleries in may 1918, arnold bennett captured the essence of this work and others from the same period: 'he has found the essentials of it, that is to say, disfigurement, danger, desolation, ruin, chaos- the little figures of men creeping devotedly and tragically over the waste. Image: a view across a devastated western front landscape towards lake zillebeke in belgium. The scene is lit by moonlight that spreads in a white pattern across the sky. The path down to the lake is surrounded by the shattered trunks of trees. A working party of four british soldiers moves along a duckboard in the foreground to the left of the composition, the men carrying sandbags and a spade. Date: 1917 (First World War).
