Saturday, september 4, 1948: at exactly 12 o'clock, princess wilhelmina appears with her daughter and son-in-law on the balcony of the palace on dam square: "i would like to inform you that i have just signed my abdication on behalf of my daughter, queen juliana. I thank you all for the trust you have given me for 50 years. I thank you for the affection with which you have always surrounded me. I look forward to your future with confidence under the caring leadership of my dearly loved child. God be with you and the queen.
