title not identified, author not identified, illustrated by utagawa kuniyoshi, late edo period (circa 1850's). Scanset of 1 volume (unknown if book is part of a series, or a single volume publication). Right & left pages each show a samurai warrior (male), with swords; right-hand image shows a samurai in "casual" dress, preparing to commit hara-kiri/seppuku (suicide by blade to the lower abdomen); the left-hand image shows one of the rōnin in battle-dress for their climactic battle (disguised as firemen), he appears to be in mid-combat, & a bowl of go stones has been flung at him. Images have been hand-coloured in an atypical-style, presumably by a previous owner of the volume. Right-to-left page 14/52, leaf 07/26 & page 15/52, leaf 08/26; facing pages
condition: both covers missing, 52 pages/26 leaves; unclear if any internal pages are missing, if so: more likely from front than back (fragments of rear cover remain in the binding, no traces of front cover are visible; existing pages appear to be contiguous. Pages are worn, stained, partially hand-coloured by a previous owner (colouring is not a part of the original, intended design, & does not follow standard conventions for costume colours of the characters). Date: 185x?.
