Satire on archbald, earl of ilay (later 3rd duke of argyll), a prominent supporter of robert walpole. He is shown as an elderly man, wearing glasses, stamping his foot and gesticulating in anger; a scottish gardener in a tartan coat and holding a thistle stands open-mouthed, to the left; to the right a black footman offers the earl a telescope. Behind are avenues of a grand formal garden between high hedges revealing distant views of the tower of kingston church, a gibbet on hownslow heath (where travellers were notoriously at risk from highwaymen) and a water tower.
